This is a perfect film for our quiet early Sunday morning schmooze. It chronicles an impoverished young mans journey of transformation from utter misery to a deeper, more profound understanding of the meaning of life. Unemployed, he lived in a wretched Korean slum with his unloved wife and elderly ill Mom. Seeking an escape from his daily misery, he applies and is accepted as a novice in a Zen monastery. The drama unfolds in an old decrepit monastery high above the town on a rugged mountain top; the monastery run by an aged Zen monk and his ward, an orphaned 7 year old boy rescued from abandonment and adopted at infancy. It is in this rugged setting high above the world, both physical and spiritual, that the extraordinary drama of the young mans enlightenment gradually unfolds. -Vic Skolnick
