SNOW CAKE
Join the CAC for the first installment of our new Staff Picks series with a film chosen by Director of Development, René Bouchard. Snow Cake is a powerful drama about an unlikely friendship between a high-functioning autistic woman and a guilt-stricken curmudgeonly man with inspired performances by Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. Growing up, I used to dream of being a programmer at an independent theater and I was really excited when my name was randomly selected to be the first staff person to choose a film for the Cinema Arts Centre's new Staff Picks series. I was surprised to discover how hard it would be to pick a fi lm. There are probably more than fi fty movies that rotate through my top five on a constant basis, a list that grows nearly every time I see something here at the CAC. But Snow Cake really is very special and deserves a chance to be seen by more people. I confess to being thoroughly infatuated with Alan Rickman and his portrayal of Alex, an exconvict on a disrupted road trip across Canada, is my favorite performance by him on screen. Snow Cake also features Emily Hampshire (The Returned), Carrie-Anne Moss, and Sigourney Weaver as Linda, a highly functional, but distinctly autistic woman who cannot touch garbage bags and loves "sparklies." I found this beautifully executed, character-driven work to be a loving and heartening treatments of grief, loss, accountability and redemption.
