#FergusonReads Reading Group: The New Jim Crow
We invite members of every community to join us in a reading group discussion of "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander.
The events in Ferguson have been upsetting for nearly everyone in our community. This reading group is an attempt to add some civility and context to the mix by exploring race, not only in St. Louis, but America as a whole. We'll draw from our growing list of books and resources (which can be found at left-bank.com) to further our discussion.
It is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. Yet, as legal star Alexander reveals in "The New Jim Crow," today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against convicted criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans.
