Topic: US Naval Station San Diego Pier 12: Managing Subsurface Risks and Uncertainty within a Design Build Team
The original Pier 12 at US Naval Station San Diego was a WWII era pier serving support ships. It was replaced in 2013 with a modern 1,400 foot pier. The project was completed by a design build team led by Manson Construction and supported by Ben C. Gerwick Associates and Geoengineers. Geotechnical challenges at the site included inter-bedded hard and soft soils, limited subsurface information, and a fault that crosses the pier alignment.
In this presentation, Lyle Stone (the lead geotechnical engineer on the project) will discuss how the team handled the challenging subsurface conditions and managed construction risks through flexible designs and close coordination between the engineers and the contractors.
