The Maydays Musical Improvisation Course
What is it?
Three hours of improvising musicals with some of the most experienced teachers of improvised musicals on the London scene. Starting from a single word, you will work on skills of creating scenes and sketches and then just bursting into song! For an audience, it looks like a miracle, for the performer it is 'more addictive than a crack filled brownie'.
The class will cumulate in a performance at the Nursery.
What will I get out of it?
During this course, you will be introduced to the core skills of melody and lyrics, rhyming and choruses, leading to the ability to create songs on any topic right there. In a supportive and nurturing environment, you will see how to fit songs into scenes and those scenes together into shows!
You will also be introduced to core elements of longform improvsation in the Chicago style, learning how to recombine character and situations to have more fun with the same situations, all without getting bitten by the plot monster.
The course involves not just in two- or three- person scenes and games, but techniques on how to create complex dance routines and chorus numbers. Musical improvisation is the ultimate team form. Even when singing that show-stopping solo, you are supported by a full company as other characters, backing singers and dancers.
Who is it for?
People who have done some improvisation before. Maybe a few drop-ins or a beginners course. We will look after you whatever you level of experience. Mostly this course is for people who want to try something new, exciting and challenging in a supportive, positive environment.
Most importantly, there is no need to have a singing voice at all!
