Gramps The Vamp
Gramps The Vamp sounds like something you'd hear when twisting the radio dial to an unknown spot at midnight in a strange city. Toggling between dark afrobeat influenced funk grooves and back on the beat hip hop beats, Gramps The Vamp sprinkles tight horn lines throughout their songs and stirs in apocalyptic utterances from classic cult Sci-Fi/Horror radio drama for a stew they like to call Doom Funk.
Assembled by Keyboardist Maxx McGathey in the fall of 2011, Gramps The Vamp arose from its sweaty house party roots to become a staple in the Chicago music scene, regularly playing prominent venues such as the Double Door, Martyrs, and Metro. In 2013 Gramps was voted Best New Band in the Chicago Reader's Best Of Chicago poll, confirming a greater visibility in their hometown.
After several lineup changes over the years, Gramps The Vamp settled into a 7 piece for their forthcoming self-titled release. Recorded at Killion Sound, in North Hollywood, CA with producer Sergio Rios (Orgone), the album features Maxx McGathey on keys, Stevenson Valentor on drums, Kevin Holt on bass, Mike Novak on guitar, Peter Gillette on trumpet, Nick Bush on alto sax, and Justin Howe on tenor sax. Several songs also feature bari saxophonist Eli Wilson, showing how the band often functions as a collective, calling up collaborators from the Chicago music scene. The band considers this album to be the first true expression of the idea Doom Funk and has their sights set on national distribution as well as sporadic touring in support of their release.
Rusty Gates
Rusty Gates is a Chicago based band with members from all over the country. When the group formed in August 2013, the idea was to combine each member's unique musical background and collaboratively create songs that stand apart from any single genre. The result is original music loaded with intricate arrangements, funky back beats and powerful improvisation. Inspired by Funk, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Soul and World, Rusty Gates strives to make music that will keep you dancing. Ten Foot Tail is the ultimate in a great musical experience. The brothers do all their own writing and recording while surrounding themselves with phenomenal musicians from the Chicago scene when they play live; this concoction make's up Ten Foot Tail. Ten Foot Tail is an ultra tight mega band that breath's musical history inspired by bands like Steely Dan and Pink Floyd.
