Baroque Fest presents: Music of the Italian Masters - Day 1
Niccolò Jommelli was the most famous and successful composer in Europe in the generation between Handel and Mozart. His Requiem in E-flat, composed in only three days in 1756 for the funeral of his patron's mother, the Duchess of Württemberg, rapidly became the most often performed musical setting of the Requiem in Europe, until Mozart's setting became known in the 19th century.
Like all great Requiem settings, this one makes vast, sweeping statements about our human condition, the grief of the survivors over their loss, and the hope for rest and redemption of the departed soul. Once a mainstay of Sacred Repertoire, it is time to reacquaint ourselves with the forgotten masterpiece of this unjustly neglected composer. Conducted by Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, this performance will feature the outstanding St. Cecilia Festival Orchestra, the Schola Cantorum of St. Mary's Cathedral, and soloists Meredith Ruduski and Brett Barnes.
