Racial Justice Workshop by DR. HEATHER HACKMAN: Teaching Racial Justice Across the Curriculum: Developing and Using a Critical Racial Justice Mindset
There is no question that the needs of 21st century are complex, varied and require our college graduates to have a broad set of knowledge and skills. More specifically, issues of equity and social justice are increasingly paramount in this global society and therefore students who cannot incorporate a social justice (equity) lens into their work are at a significant disadvantage in their work, social and community lives. Unfortunately, this content has historically been relegated to the social sciences and as a result has sometimes been missed by students with other majors. This workshop intends to address this gap by focusing on racial equity and the development of a critical race lens as applied to every content area on a college campus. The session begins with the development of a critical race lens and then explores its application across the college curriculum. This is an interactive workshop with a solid balance of theory and practice and expects that participants will bring specific content and process questions with them.
