Hale Baskin - A Swinging Young Singer with Presence and Poise
Endowed with a clear, beautiful voice, a sure sense of swing, and a seemingly innate sense of the nuances of jazz phrasing, Hale Baskin is certainly a singer of great promise. But more than that, Hale is already a musician whose artistry can be enjoyed in the here and now. Hale Baskin is not just a singer with a future. She's a singer with a presence!
Hale's burgeoning talent is on ready display through her ever-increasing schedule of appearances and in her award-winning debut CD, The Forecast Calls for Hale. The recording features some of the San Francisco Bay Area's most well regarded jazz musicians stars like pianist Larry Dunlap, trombonist Wayne Wallace, bassist Seward McCain and drummer Jim Zimmerman.
An ensemble of top-draw players like these could hardly fail to turn out a quality recording, but the real revelation is Hale Baskin herself. From sensitive performances that belie her youth on "Nature Boy" and "Old Country" to swinging delights like "Straighten UP and Fly Right," Hale displays a versatility, maturity and ability to please from first track to last that's sure to win over fans of the Great American Songbook. She even scats up a storm on "Summertime" and "Our Love is Here to Stay."
Hale won her second DownBeat Magazine Student Music competition in 2006 for Outstanding Performance. DownBeat was initially impressed with Hale's ability as she won first place in her division of their 2002 competition. Her prize? A scholarship to Berklee College of Music's Summer Program, a curriculum she completed in the summer of 2003. Hale ended her 2005 performance schedule with 12 shows and a New Years Eve party performing with Arturo Sandoval and his band at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland.
Oakland Tribune writer Jim Harrington said of that Yoshi's performance, "[Baskin] showed a great deal of maturity and talent as she crooned through two tough numbers, 'God Bless the Child' and 'The Christmas Song.' Judging by the reaction from the crowd, it looks like we have a rising star in our midst. Remember Baskin's name. You'll be hearing it again soon."
