Lexicon of Sustainability Pop-Up
Join the creators of the Lexicon of Sustainability and the people behind the pages of Douglas Gayeton's new book, Local. Music, art, film, and food abounds as the Grange turns into a pop-up art and food show and the pages of Local come alive.
Pop in the the Grange anytime between 3:30 - 5:30 to see, hear, and taste the Lexicon of Sustainability!
Combining visuals with insights and a lexicon of more than 200 agricultural terms and principles explained by today's most innovative thought leaders, Local showcases and explores how to create a food system that benefits the environment and the people living in it.
The book includes photographs and interviews from today's foremost practitioners in food and farming, including Alice Waters, Wes Jackson, Carl Safina, Temple Grandin, Paul Stamets, Patrick Holden, Barton Seaver, Vandana Shiva, Dr. Elaine Ingham, and Joel Salatin, as well as farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers across the United States. http://www.lexiconofsustainability.com/
In addition to the creators of the Lexicon, who will be displaying art and film from the project, we will be joined by the following producers featured in the book:
Straus Creamery Straus Family Creamery was founded in 1994. They are a family-owned and operated business, dedicated to make the highest quality and minimally processed organic dairy products. With their dairy and creamery located in the small town of Marshall on the Northern California Coast, they were the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi River and the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States. http://strausfamilycreamery.com/
Preston Farm and Winery Preston of Dry Creek is an organic farm and winery located in Dry Creek Valley near the historic farm town of Healdsburg, California. Founded in the 1970s by the Preston family, the nature of the business has changed over time from a conventional estate winery to a diversified farm, counting wine as one of many home-grown and hand-made food products. The Prestons include in their repertoire of concerns and commitments food, environmentalism, and community activism. https://www.prestonvineyards.com/
Medlock Ames Founded by best friends, Chris James and Ames Morison, their vineyards are 100% CCOF certified, they farm sustainably, and their winery is 100% solar-powered. Their Bell Mountain Estate Ranch has 338 acres of which less than 20% is planted to vines. It is simply breathtaking. As a special offer to friends of SHED and the Lexicon of Sustainability group, Medlock Ames is offering a 15% discount on any of their wines with a flat $15 shipping rate with a minimum 3-bottle order. Mendocino Grain Project The Mendocino Grain Project aims to provide Mendocino County and adjacent regions with sustainably-cultivated, nutrient-rich grains and legumes. They grow grains and support other Northern California grain growers by harvesting, cleaning, and milling their crops. Their granary is in Ukiah, California, and they grow our grains at Nelson Family Vineyards in the Russian River Valley south of Ukiah. http://www.mendocinograin.net/
Cowgirl Creamery Sue Conley and Peggy Smith took a hippie trip to San Francisco in 1976 after finishing degrees at the University of Tennessee. By the early 1990s, Peggy and Sue were ready for a new challenge. They found it in Pt. Reyes Station, a picturesque postage-stamp-of-a-town on the coast about an hour north of San Francisco. They have been making award-wining cheeses there ever since, using milk from neighboring Straus Family Creamery. http://www.cowgirlcreamery.com/
Daily Acts Daily Acts began in 2002 with the publication of the first Ripples journal, promoting a healthy, just and sustainable lifestyle, and their first green home tour. Since then, they have grown into an effective, award winning organization which empowers individuals by providing hands-on sustainability education and resources, to build skills and strengthen communities. http://dailyacts.org/
All ages are welcome. Food and wines tasting samples will be provided by the participating producers. Must be 21 and over to taste wine.
