In Tunisia, Selima has learned that Muslim girls only inherit half as much as their brothers, meaning she will be left with far less than her twin brother, Selim. She demands an explanation from her father Ali, a widower, who tells her that this rule cannot be changed because it is based on the Koran. When Ali dies, Selim strictly adheres to the inheritance law and leaves to live abroad, leaving Selima to cope for herself.
