Butoh Ritual Mexicano duet by Diego Pinon (Mexico)
Male? Female? ARCHETYPES: Spirit in Transit (World premiere). Duet performance directed by Diego Pinon (Mexico), featuring Nicole LeGette (Chicago)
Dance as a ritual in the present; an energetic dialogue on stage; a trans-cultural exchange beyond conventional body languages to recover the idea of completeness.
Diego Pinon deeply investigated all facets of his Mexican heritage under specific guidance of Energetic Movement since 1975. His varied performance training includes Graham, Limon, and Horton dance methods; therapeutic body exploration in Bioenergetics, Core Energetics, and Gestalt; and theater techniques of Ritual Theater, Odin Theater, the Roy Hart Theater, and Teatro Tascabile. Diego also studied contemporary movement and therapy techniques of Release, Alexander, Klein, and Butoh, a Japanese style of Ritual Dance. Among his Butoh teachers are the renowned masters Natsu Nakajima, Kazuo Ohno, Yoshito Ohno, Min Tanaka, Hisako Horikawa and Mitsuyo Uesugi.
Diego has enjoyed numerous solo performance and commissions to direct professional dance ensembles and theater companies in the US, Europe, and Mexico. The Butoh Ritual Mexicano Dance approach is an evolving distillation of Diego's extensive research in body-based energetic traditions around the world.
Nicole LeGette, a maverick of Chicago's dance and performance art scene, is the only local artist dedicated to performing, presenting, and teaching butoh; a provocative, rigorous, expressive dance-theater that originated in 1959 Japan. Since 2000, Nicole has trained with master butoh artists in Japan, Mexico, Canada, and across the US; and has produced several of these artists in Chicago-based events. She has avidly studied Butoh Ritual Mexicano with Diego Pinon since 2002.
