It's the 75th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz"a fine time to celebrate the genius of the man who wrote the music. Harold Arlen is one of the giants of American popular song. From his earliest hits writing for Harlem's Cotton Club ("Stormy Weather," "I've Got the World on a String") to his innovative work for Broadway and Hollywood with such lyricists as Johnny Mercer and Yip Harburg, Arlen was rooted in the rich traditions of jazz and the blues. We'll cover his 40-year career by featuring such theater and film songs as "That Old Black Magic," "Get Happy," "A Sleepin' Bee" and "Blues in the Night." As for "Over the Rainbow," a national survey found it to be the most beloved American song of the 20th century.
