Share this event:

Ahead of the premiere of Mark Baldwin's new work for Rambert, The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, this event will explore how science can be used to inspire the arts.
The event will include the chance to observe a rehearsal of The Strange Charm of Mother Nature; a work that continues Mark Baldwin's interest in science following on Constant Speed created for Einstein Year in 2005 and The Comedy of Change made in 2009 as part of the Darwin 200 celebrations.

The Strange Charm of Mother Nature is inspired by Quarks, Gamma Ray Bursts, and the Higgs Boson and has been informed by a visit to CERN in 2013.
Following the open rehearsal there will be a panel discussion followed by a panel discussion exploring the relationship between science and the arts. The panel with include Mark Baldwin, Ariane Koek (International Arts Development at CERN), and Subodh Patil (Theoretical Physicist at CERN).

Mark Baldwin
Mark Baldwin was born in Fiji and raised and educated in New Zealand. His interest in the arts led him to pursue a degree in Fine Art at the University of Auckland, something which has influenced his approach to creativity ever since.

He danced with Royal New Zealand Ballet before joining Rambert (then Ballet Rambert). He performed with Rambert for ten years and used the opportunity to develop his choreographic skills.

On leaving Rambert he was appointed Resident Choreographer at Sadler's Wells, where he established the Mark Baldwin Dance Company (1993 - 2001). His status as a leading choreographer was affirmed with the creation of over 40 works for the Mark Baldwin Dance Company and other major dance companies including: The Royal Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Berlin State Opera House, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Scottish Ballet (where he was also Resident Choreographer in 1996), London City Ballet and Rambert.

Mark has received numerous awards, including the Bonnie Bird Choreographic Award (1992), the 1995 Time Out Award for Dance, and the South Bank Show Award for The Bird Sings With Its Fingers (2001). He received the French Grand Prix Award for Film (1996), for Echo, a collaboration with visual artist Anish Kapoor and composer Brian Elias, and in 2002, the Dance Artist Fellowship for Outstanding Contribution to Dance.

In December 2002, Mark returned to Rambert as Artistic Director. His vision since then has been to commission works that encourage collaboration with other artforms. Critically praised for reinvigorating the Company and its repertoire, to date Mark has commissioned new works by numerous British and international choreographers.

In May 2005, Mark premièred Constant Speed, his first work for Rambert since becoming Artistic Director. The work, and his high calibre of his artistic directorship of Rambert, won him the TMA Theatre Award for Achievement in Dance.

His restaging of Michael Clark's Swamp also won an Olivier Award. In 2006 Mark choreographed The Wedding for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and collaborated with Amanda Eyles to rework Andrée Howard's 1939 work Lady into Fox.

In 2008 he created the highly acclaimed work Eternal Light, and in 2009, The Comedy of Change.

In 2010, the Company won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, in recognition of the previous years' repertoire.

Ariane Koek
Ariane Koek (UK) is a Clore Fellow and the first cultural specialist appointed by  CERN - the world's largest particle physics laboratory based outside Geneva, in Switzerland. She has led on International Arts at the laboratory since Spring 2010, creating and initiating the laboratory's first arts policy, Great Arts for Great Science, as well as creating, directing and curating the policy's flagship programme, the annual Collide@CERN artists residency programme, the new Accelerate@CERN artists research and the Visiting Artists programmes. These 3 programmes put the arts and science on the same level of interplay and exchange of ideas to make creative collisions which generate new ground-breaking projects.
Prior to CERN, Ariane was CEO of the Arvon Foundation for Creative Writing which runs up to 120 writers' residencies a year in 4 different locations, and she had an extensive award-winning career as a BBC producer and director in both radio and television, working across arts, science, and politics.

Ariane's field of expertise is across the arts and the history of ideas, including science and philosophy. She is also an independent curator and writer,  has worked as a consultant for creating innovative science communications and events,  lectures widely and internationally about the art/science nexus and on creativity, is involved in many international consultations on culture and communications, and chairs international conferences.
Her career and work is dedicated to her fundamental belief in the power of the imagination and self-expression to generate change and innovation beyond paradigms.

Subodh Patil
Subodh is a theoretical physicist specializing in early universe cosmology and its interface with particle physics at the highest energies. Since finishing his doctoral studies on string theory and cosmology at McGill University in Montreal, he has held research positions at the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and most recently at CERN in Geneva. His work focuses on trying to uncover the fundamental physics that gave rise to the big bang and whether it really was the beginning of the universe.
