A Midsummer Night's Jazz:
Featuring The Sari Schorr Quartet & New Place Players
"If you have ever been in love, or felt the pangs of jealousy, or the fierce drive of ambition; if you've ever grieved for a lost friend, or rejoiced at the promise of the future, then you find Shakespeare intensely relevant to your life today" - Gregory Doran, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
With his mastery of meter and an indisputable way with words, it's no surprise that musicians flock to William Shakespeare for inspiration. The Sari Schorr Quartet will present a collection of songs from great artists ranging from Lou Reed to Bob Dylan who have drawn from Shakespeare as an influence.
Exactly 450 years since his birth, Shakespeare is still the most influential writer of all time, having transformed English drama and the very language that we speak. The Sari Schorr Quartet is taking a look at some of the more modern takes on his work in music.
As the powerhouse lead singer for National Blues Hall of Famer Joe Louis Walker, Singer/Songwriter Sari Schorr burst onto the international music scene. She has appeared on the Conan O'Brian show and has toured worldwide, receiving critical acclaim for her stunning, soulful vocals and magnetic stage presence. Schorr mixes her passion for music with her interest in social causes. Her humanitarian efforts include work in Haiti with Sean Penn and India. She also founded Matters, a non-profit organization that helps draw attention to various humanitarian causes through the arts.
Setting the stage for the evening New Place Players will perform a whimsical scene from Shakespeare's most erotic and magical comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream with musical accompaniment and puppetry to create a mystical world in which the presence of fairies isn't mere superstition. The New Place Players are an ensemble of fourteen professional Equity actors and musicians dedicated to bringing Shakespeare directly to its audience in an intimate setting. Their inventive take on Shakespeare's romantic comedy of love triangles, fairies, and kings unfurls in the intimacy of the beautiful 4,200 square foot ShapeShifter Lab performance space in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The performance surrounds and envelops the audience, creating an atmosphere of intimacy and excitement, blurring the separation between the actors and spectators.
Post-show talk with Artistic Director Craig Bacon and members of the company along with Sari Schorr.
