Sema Ceremony of the Whirling Dervishes
The Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi Order of America will present the Sema Ceremony on December 17, Shebi Arus, honoring the great Sufi Mystic Hz. Mevlana Jelaluddin RUMI.
The Ceremony will be directed by Postneshin Jelaluddin Loras, from Konya, Turkey, founder of the Mevlevi Order of America, presented as it has been for over 700 years.
The evening will feature the prayer dancing of the Whirling Dervishes. In their traditional tall felt hats and brilliant white garments, turners whirl in unison, attuning to the music of the heart.
Special guest musicians from Turkey will play classical and devotional Turkish music, including master musicians Necati Celik, oud (fretless lute), Hafiz Arif Bicer, vocals and ney (reed flute), and Timucin Cevikoglu, vocals, along with U.S.-based musicians Jemaluddin Henke, ney, Talia Marcus, violin and viola, and Nooriddin Crammatte, kudum (small kettle drums).
RUMI is widely known in the west as a best-selling poet, whose writing addresses the timeless subjects of Love, God and Mysticism. A prelude to the UNESCO 2007 Year of RUMI honoring the 13th-century mystical poet.
Sponsor and Patron ticket packages include first row seating, and a reception with the musicians and dervishes.
