The Naked Civil Servant
A film ahead of its time about a man even more ahead of his time, THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT created a furor in 1975 when it premiered on PBS. Starring the brilliant John Hurt, it is based on the autobiography of Quentin Crisp, a man struggling to live a flamboyant, openly gay life at a time when homosexuality was against the law in Britain. In his early twenties, Crisp stumbled into London's gay demimonde, developed a bohemian social world and a career as an artist's model, and was even put on trial for solicitation. His outlandish behavior shocked the intolerant British society of the 1930s and drew frequent homophobic attacks, but Crisp staunchly refused to compromise his style. Late in life, he became a cult celebrity and an international gay icon, a 20th-century Oscar Wilde. His natural wit and unique perspective on life make THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT by turns hilarious and poignant.
The award-winning film is shown in conjunction with AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK, SLGFFs opening night film, in which Hurt reprises his role. Dont miss this rare opportunity to revisit this groundbreaking classic on the big screen!
