Raging Grannies
If the Golden Girls spent their time planning protests while enjoying their evening cheesecake, you'd get something resembling the Raging Grannies, an activist organization of fun, fiery old ladies with a purpose. Raging Grannies was founded in Canada in 1987; the first US incarnation appeared in Seattle in 1995, and they've been going strong ever since. These activist seniors are just as likely to demonstrate against arms proliferation or environmental degradation as they are to knit a sweater. Taking theater to the streets with original and reimagined protest songs, performance art, and costumes, the grannies use humor and satire to get their message across, including support for human rights, gay rights, economic justice, and racial equality. Proving that street activism isn't just for the young, RAGING GRANNIES is an exciting, touching, and inspiring look at an energetic group of women who won't take injustice sitting down. One raging granny declares: "I don't see why older women can't do street performance." We don't see why they cant either, and youll see why we're so glad theyre out there.
