Queen of Brazil/Queens at Heart
The two films in this program present a fascinating history of transgender expression.
The Miss Gay Brazil pageant has been running for 32 years, attracting as many as 10,000 spectators with its blend of gender illusion and 1960s-style glamour. QUEEN OF BRAZIL focuses on one contestant, Fabio (aka Michelle Honda), and his partner, Junior. But along the way we meet other hopefuls, both behind the scenes and on stage, in fabulously colorful costumes. Their dedication to being the best is amazingFabio and Junior take a three-day bus ride to reach Rio so Fabio can compete in the qualifying competitionand despite the cultures reputation for machismo, the acceptance and support from family and friends is remarkable. No trip is too long and no headdress too high when pursuing the crown of Brazils most beautiful girl!
QUEENS AT HEART offers a rare and poignant glimpse into pre-Stonewall transsexual life, including early footage of drag balls in the New York area. Despite the film having been made with a mainstream lens, the four transwomen interviewed are depicted with dignity and respect as they explore gender and sexuality. The only remaining print of the film had been neglected and was badly faded, but thanks to the Outfest Legacy Project, the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is the first festival to show a newly restored 35mm print!
