Lecture: Christopher Isherwood and the California Dream
The author Christopher Isherwood is best known for his Berlin Stories, the basis for the musical and film Cabaret. Born in England, Isherwood emigrated to the United States in 1939 and lived in Southern California until his death in 1986. He recognized California as a land of opportunity, a place where, as a gay man, he could escape the strictures of his native Britain, and where he could grow as a writer, join the Hollywood dream factory, and find personal and spiritual fulfillment. Establishing his home in Santa Monica, Isherwood found his life partner in artist Don Bachardy, and he wrote numerous novels, memoirs and screenplays. Among his many works is the novel A Single Man, a modern literary treasure that Tom Ford adapted in 2009 for a feature film starring Colin Firth. Sara S. "Sue" Hodson, Curator, Literary Manuscripts will tell the story of Isherwood's life as he pursued and lived the California Dream. Ahmanson Room, Brody Botanical Center.
