Amancio: Two Faces on a Tombstone
As a young boy, Amancio Corrales emigrated with his parents from Mexico to Yuma, Arizona, in search of a better life. After coming out, Amancio started performing as a female impersonator and soon became well known in clubs throughout the Southwest. He dreamed of one day being a star in Las Vegas, but that dream was cut short on May 6, 2005, when Amancios body was found in the Colorado River, brutally beaten and stabbed. He was just 23 years old. Amancio was dressed as a woman when he was killed, leading some community members to wonder if this was a random event or a hate crime. Sensing apathy on the part of local law enforcement, concerned area resident and activist Michael Baughman believed that justice would not be served unless someone took action. This intriguing documentary contains emotional interviews with family and friends, and follows Baughmans three-year journey seeking justice on behalf of a young man he had never met. The film offers a fascinating and poignant look into a community forced to confront its pervasive prejudices on issues of sexual orientation and gender expression.
