Our 39th season sets sail with a rare treat: Vaughan Williams' magnificent Sea Symphony, a concert that also marks David Carrier's 35th anniversary as Music Director of NCS. This bold choral and orchestral symphony solidified the composer's reputation when it premiered in 1910. Inspired by the humanistic vision of Walt Whitman, Vaughan Williams selected texts from several of Whitman's poems, using the sea and sailors as a metaphor for the voyage of the soul through life. This expansive work took six years and many revisions, but was quickly recognized as a work of striking originality and an important addition to the choral repertoire.
