Brazilian Blowout
The Emerald Tablet is pleased to present the brilliant Brazilian vocalist Sarah Cabral in concert. Accompanying Sarah will be two virtuoso musicians: mandolinist Eva Scow and guitarist Mike Taylor, along with percussion master Alex Elvis Calatayud. There will also be spins by DJ Mr. Leonard following the event! Don't miss these remarkable artists performing in our historic and acoustically-excellent hall.
There is much fascinating material to be found at the intersection of jazz and the wildly influential popular music of Brazil in the 1960s and 1970s. The latter, from such artists as Edu Lôbo and João Bosco, had a huge influence on the former, and the former returned the favor. Combine this fertile confluence with some of the exciting avant-garde sounds from artists like Maria João and Mário Laginha and you have an idea of the type of delights this evening will offer.
Sarah Cabral is a Brazilian vocalist who has been living in the Bay Area for the past eight years, where she studies and performs with her mentor Pianist/ composer Marcos Silva . She is inspired by the lyricism and poetry of her native music and challenged to integrate its musical ideas with those of her own creative space. Born in the South of Brazil, Sarah's songbook is a reflection of a an interest in the intersection of music, poetry and theater. She counts among her influences, the artists such as Mario De Andrade, Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal and Guinga. She is currently working on several projects with local musicians, and performing in the Bay Area.
Eva Scow is an American mandolinist and violinist. She began playing music at a young age, starting on the piano at age 4. She began playing in orchestras and various groups, exploring different kinds of music, embracing the disparate neighborhoods of modern jazz, intelligent pop, Brazilian and bluegrass, and creating an irresistibly uplifting and funky fusion that transcends genre description. In 2008 she released her debut CD as a co-leader with guitarist Dusty Brough "Sharon By the Sea." Eva is also a member of the contemporary jazz quartet Espacio. Eva has recorded for mandolinist David Grisman on his album "Tone Poets", and also with the Anthony Wilson Nonet on their CD "Power of Nine". In 2006 Eva was selected as one of sixteen musicians to participate in a week-long workshop of the bassist Edgar Meyer, culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall. She is equally at home in the classical, folk and jazz idioms.
Mike Taylor plays a range of music from classical to pop, jazz and Brazilian music. He is also a talented composer and song-writer.
