CHESAPEAKE
CHESAPEAKE is a magical-realist fable about a New York performance artist, a firebrand conservative Southern politician, and the dog that unites their fates forever. Basically, three words encompass this play: Arts. Politics. Dogs. CHESAPEAKE speaks to the possibility of true mutual understanding and the power of art to help us find it.
What begins as a tussle over public art funding between a provocative performance artist and a conservative Southern senator quickly billows into a much broader battle that forces both men to completely re-think the value of art. Caught in the middle is the senators beloved Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This joyous one-man play ultimately spares no one on either side of the political divide, and it will leave audiences with powerful ideas to ponder and discuss about our humanity, the value of art, and the bond between the two.
OVATION RECOMMENDED! The LA Stage Alliance Ovation Voters, a body of theatre professionals selected annually through a rigorous application/interview process by the Ovation Review Committee, awards the O! Recommended designation to productions ranked in the top 20% of all registered shows in the "Overall Production" voting category. In CHESAPEAKEs category (non-musical) there are only 5 of 75 total shows currently running in Los Angeles that have received the designation Ovation Recommended.
LA WEEKLY - "GO"! "...director Martin Bedoian gives it a clever, funny production, and Thomsen's performance alone is worth the trip." - Neal Weaver
"Syzygy Theatre Group's production of "Chesapeake" at Grove Theater Center in Burbank is a delightful treat...[Mark Thomsen's] portrayal of Kerr and a list of other characters is inspired...for those looking to be immersed in a sense of the sublime - this is just the ticket" -Phillip Hain, Burbank Leader
"Syzygy's Artistic Director Martin Bedoian directs the play with a sure hand and Thomsen is perfectly cast as the lovable and goofy performance artist. Chesapeake by Lee Blessing is a play with enough surprises to delight and amuse." -Pauline Adamek, ArtsBeatLA
