PART OF HANDMADE WORLDS: A FESTIVAL OF PUPPET THEATRE (For more information about all the festival activities, go to www.handmadeworlds.org)
Needle felting is my favorite medium for constructing puppets. Materials for felting puppets are easy to take along so that you can work on them where you are most comfortable. This method of puppet construction allows me to sit in a most comfy chair with my feet up and a basket of soft, fluffy wool beside me, as I make a vast array of charming puppets without getting wet, spreading stuff on every flat surface in the house, waiting for glue to dry, or getting poisoned! Plus, you help keep sheep employed!
Participants will learn basic needle felting techniques while constructing their choice of a small rod puppet, or a head for another type of puppet from un-spun wool and felting needles. All supplies will be provided, and you will leave with needles, a foam surface on which to work, and a completed puppet or puppet head.
(Maximum 18 participants, $15 materials fee payable directly to instructor day of workshop.)
Bio: Since 1983, Pam Corcoran has brought stories to life with her original hand-made puppets. Most shows focus on the following: character, health, and nature topics. Pam brings puppet shows, hands-on workshops, and residencies to children of all ages and abilities to museums, schools, art festivals and libraries. She began needle felting with un-spun wool around 2000, and now, 14 years later, is still discovering ways to use this marvelous, renewable resource. (The backyard woolies need to be shorn every Spring - that is quite a bit of wool!)
HANDMADE WORLDS: A Festival of Puppet Theatre is produced by Open Eye Figure Theatre in collaboration with the Great Plains Region of The Puppeteers of America and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.
