PART OF HANDMADE WORLDS: A FESTIVAL OF PUPPET THEATRE (For more information about all the festival activities, go to www.handmadeworlds.org)
We will work through shadow puppetry technique, live cinematic editing, and overhead projector tricks. We will also play with human silhouette performance. We will cover how to merge human shadows with 2-D puppets and projected environments. During this workshop, participants will devise a short piece using shadow puppetry and silhouette movement..
(Maximum 20 participants)
Bio: MANUAL CINEMA combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic motifs, and live sound manipulation to create immersive theatrical stories. Using overhead projectors, paper puppets, actors in silhouette, and a live band, Manual Cinema transforms the experience of attending the cinema and imbues it with liveness, ingenuity, and theatricality.
Manual Cinema was founded in 2010 by five Chicago artists with diverse backgrounds in theater, visual arts, and music. In their first two years of spectacle-making, they have created two feature-length, live-scored cinematic shadow puppet shows, Ada/Ava and Lula del Ray; a large-scale installation piece for the University of Chicago; FJORDS, a feature-length collaboration with the string quartet Chicago Q Ensemble based on the poems of Zachary Schomburg; and Meanwhile, a music video commissioned by contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbird.
Manual Cinema's work has been performed in Chicago at the MCA, Links Hall, the Poetry Foundation, the Hideout, and the Charnel House, in addition to various bars and found spaces around the city.
Nationally they have performed at the NYC Fringe Festival, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Eric Carle Museum, St. Marks NYC, and the Tank NYC. Their work has been commissioned by the Logan Square Arts Center, the University of Chicago, and eighth blackbird.
Manual Cinema was ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago in the Theater and Performance Studies program in the fall of 2012, where they taught as adjunct faculty. In 2013 Manual Cinema has held residencies and taught workshops at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, The Future of Storytelling Conference, NYC, RCAH at Michigan State University, and Puppeteers of America: Puppet Festival (R)evolution in Swarthmore, PA.
Mementos Mori, Manual Cinema's new feature length performance, will premiere at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago in January, 2015 as part of the Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival.
HANDMADE WORLDS: A Festival of Puppet Theatre is produced by Open Eye Figure Theatre in collaboration with the Great Plains Region of The Puppeteers of America and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.
