About this concert:
As friends, we've come together to share some favorite works, old and new.
We're fascinated by Zemlinsky, now making news as a forgotten composer being rediscovered! A student of Bruckner, the only teacher of Arnold Schoenberg, encouraged by Johannes Brahms, friend of Gustav Mahler, and first love and composition teacher of the much-wooed Alma Schindler Mahler, this Austrian Jewish emigre occupies a pivotal stance between the old world and the new. His early Trio in d minor, (1896) is a romantic gem, paying tribute to Brahms and beyond.
Beethoven's witty and elegantly crafted Trio in B-flat, Opus 11, and a new jazz trio with Afro-Carribean influences by composer/performer Daniel Schnyder, "A Friday Night in August" complete the eclectic program.
