Marguerite Duras - Savannah Bay & Le Shaga
Running time: 2 hours 15 minutes including one intermission.
Savannah Bay is an evocative portrait of two women discovering a common bond in a lost mother and daughter. Exploring of love, grief, and the overwhelming power of memory, Savannah Bay is a delicate, lyrical and haunting piece of theatre.
Le Shaga: 3 Outcasts. 1 Encounter. 2 of them speak English. 1 speaks "SHAGA" - a made up language that nobody knows. They talk some, and they talk some more, and talk incessantly for an hour, desperately seeking common ground. Take the journey into a no mans land where the boundaries of language and a blanket of nonsense are mixed into a high energy and corrosive cocktail.
Original adaptations of these two works by famed French filmmaker, novelist and dramatist, Marguerite Duras (writer of "Hiroshima mon amour" and "The Lover") are brought to Toronto for the first time by Spiel Players, an artist-founded theatre company who adapt and translate classics and create cross-disciplinary work.

Our Company:
Spiel Players is an emerging theatre company invested in multidisciplinary performance art with an emphasis on language and music. Spiel Players is home to many of Toronto's emerging musicians and artists where we deliver both new original performances as well as multi-language adaptations from all corners of the world. Our love of live music and passion for supporting local musicians has made music and soundscape creation an integral part of our work. We believe that theatre should ignite all the senses and we are deeply interested in how live soundscape can heighten the visceral experience.
Spiel Players was created in 2009 by a group of University of Windsor graduates and Toronto musicians (Lisa Hamalainen, Heidi Lynch, Steve Ward, Nate Lyons-Fisher, Dave Baker) who were workshopping an original, multilingual play called Secrets Red. We began our work at the Cameron House the perfect home for our actor/musician brains and hearts to collide. Since these early days we have grown into a collective, supporting the growth of an original musical by Lauren Toffan and Yan Li (MisPrint 1st Issue Winner of Best of Venue at 2011 Toronto Fringe), producing The Russian Play by Hannah Moscovitch with live music by Emilie Anne Brancanto, and staging two of Lisa Hamalainen's original translations and adaptations The Bear and Lady With a Lap Dog by Anton Chekhov, with live soundscape by Steve Ward (of Caribou, and Friendly Rich).
Hamalainen began her theatre career in Moscow, Russia, and it was through the Moscow Art Theatre that she discovered Duras. Lisa and her colleague Peyton Le Barr decided to bring these beautiful pieces to the stage, working with a fantastic group of artists (Victorine Brown, Joanne Williams, Deborah Grover, Johnathan Sousa, Brett Haynes, Joe Pagnan, Cameron Tomsett, Zoe Ruth Fairless, Carin Ann Crabtree Addy Johnson).
