Jesse Sheidlower: 'The F-Word'
Dick Cheney snarled it on the Senate floor. Bono let it slip at the Grammys. We cant say it here, but lexicographer and language expert Jesse Sheidlower probably will. In the new edition of his historical dictionary The F-Word, the Oxford English Dictionary editor-at-large has catalogued hundreds of citations of the least-printable word in the English language, from the colorful dialogue of Gore Vidal to the military's creative use of "intensifiers" to boost morale. Since the 15th century, no other word has been adapted, interpreted, euphemized, censored, and shouted with as much ardor or force, and while it is now largely accepted as an integral part of language, "the F-word" still manages to confound, provoke, and scandalize.
