Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Ben Schmidt-Swartz Nelson Oliva Group
Straight ahead jazz group with a classic instrumentation of tenor sax, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. The band is devoted to composing and performing music strongly rooted in the jazz tradition, while also bearing in mind the present. The project was founded and is co-led by Ben Schmidt-Swartz and Nelson Oliva.

The Ben Schmidt-Swartz Nelson Oliva Group released its debut album "Mastermind" in November 2012 with a series of successful concerts in Michigan and Chicago. "Mastermind" contains 7 original compositions and 2 standards, arranged in contemporary styles and formats. The recording is an exploration of different instrumental settings: from a drums and saxophone duo to a hard-bop oriented jazz sextet.
In January and February 2014 the group toured extensively throughout Nelson's home country of Chile. The group gave 12 high-profile performances, including headlining at the "Festival Internacional de Jazz de Lebu" in the coastal city of Lebu, and "Semana Internacional del Jazz en La Patagonia" in the Patagonian city of Punta Arenas, which is one of the southernmost cities on the planet.
