Sex Tape Project
A steamy new work from Toronto based fu-GEN Theatre Company, Sex Tape Project explores themes of intimacy and voyeurism in the vertical sprawl endemic of our current urban landscape.
The performance takes place in a hotel, while the audience is in a second location, directly across the street, watching through a window. Three auditory plays are presented as three versions of what might be happening in the hotel rooms. Audiences are given a pair of headphones and a set of binoculars. The headphones are strategically laid out so that no one person is sitting beside another listening to the same play. The actors run through their tracks once, but in essence three plays have just been simultaneously performed.
The nature of the experiment is to deconstruct the ideologies behind theatrical spectatorship. The delocalization doesn't necessarily disqualify an energy exchange between spectators and performers, but it does interrupt or evolve the exchange. And while it is a social event in that the audience are all together, they are not all experiencing the same narrative event. Questions of how that changes the spectator and the theatrical experience are of particular interest to the project and to fu-GEN's evolving theatrical modality.
Voted one of the top 10 theatre companies in Toronto, fu-GEN Theatre Company is the only professional Asian Canadian theatre company in Canada. fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company is dedicated to the development of Asian Canadian theatre artists through the production of new and established works.
