Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Hearts and Minds
Hearts and Minds is a Chicago-based jazz/experimental collective trio comprised of Jason Stein (Locksmith Isidore, Russ Johnson Quartet) on bass clarinet, Paul Giallorenzo (Gitgo, Breakway) on synth, and Frank Rosaly (Rempis Percussion Quartet, The Young Mothers) on drums.
"Stein stands apart from the standard instrumental lineage. Whereas a player like Eric Dolphy or Michel Portal builds on wide intervallic leaps and verticality, Stein (like Michel Pilz, Rudi Mahall or John Tchicai) operates in a horizontal fashion, favoring a breadth of twists and turns more sideways than anything else, woven into a post-Ornette fabric."- Clifford Allen, All About Jazz
"Quirky (catchy even) melodies that approach time and space in a playful way are written into relatively compact forms. The more challenging, ornate stuff comes through the band's improvisations. Although it often might seem like the groove is thrown out with the bathwater, it's often still there amidst the chaos; obliquely implied, deeply camouflaged an undetected gravitational pull keeping the planet just within orbit.
