Xicano Dreams: Earth, Life, and Labors of Love
AZTLAN's Xicano Dreams: Earth, Life and Labors of Love (Modern Mestizo Choreography)
Interpreting the beauty and elegance of Austin's Xicano/Latino culture through dance, the AZTLAN Dance Company presents Xicano Dreams, a full-evening performance of signature theatrical dance that continues the company's choreographic departures into daring, creative, and culturally relevant movement-based story telling. Provocative and moving, each work in Xicano Dreams reconstructs cultural and social narratives of East Austin lifeways and offers imaginative new visions for artists and audiences to share in dance that is culturally rooted, artistically dynamic and socially relevant in our contemporary moment.
More about Xicano Dreams
Aztlan frames Xicano Dreams within the context of an intergalactic traveler's imaginings for a postmodern Chicana/o humanity on earth. Deconstructing myth and re-visioning symbol, Aztlan narrates the discovery of a timeless codex that plots the historical trajectory of a people's civilization in the ever-expanding borderlands spaces between here and there, somewhere and nowhere, but resolutely in the present. "The dance body forcefully communicates in multiple ways that words fail to fully capture. Aztlan's dance work empowers audiences with interpretive visual prisms for viewers to engage, thus investing each in the dance story's outcome," says Aztlan's artistic director Roén Salinas.
Celebrating our 40th anniversary, AZTLAN Dance Company has evolved its unique fusion dance style that blends traditions of old into dance that is new. It's powerful, contemporary, and relevant.... It's Aztlan Dance!
