In recent years, the toy piano has made the journey from the nursery to the concert hall, becoming a respected (if sometimes playful) part of the world of classical music. Phyllis Chen is at the forefront of this wave of performers exploring the possibilities of the toy piano. With her frequent collaborator, sound designer and video artist Rob Dietz, Chen will bring her toy pianos to the Cinemas Sky Room for a performance of works by Cage, Svensson, Chen, and others.
Phyllis Chens artistic pursuits take her in numerous directions as a toy pianist, pianist, composer, and performance artist, leading to her selection as a New Music/New Places Fellow at the 2007 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Since discovering the toy piano, Ms. Chen has become a trailblazer, performing original multi-media compositions using toy pianos, electronics and video and works by prominent 20th century composers such as John Cage and Julia Wolfe. In the 2008-09 season, Ms. Chen appeared at Symphony Space on the CAG/New Works series in a concert that showcases her prowess on both piano and toy piano with a program that includes original compositions, and works by Bach, Schubert, Liszt, and Jancek. She is the featured musician for Steven Merritts off-broadway production, Coraline, which opened in May 2009. Ms. Chens traditional piano credits include honors at the International Bartok/Kabalevsky Piano and the Coleman Chamber Music Competitions.
