The Lisa Engelken Quartet: Music of the [Hemi]Spheres
Lisa Engelken returns to The Sound Room after two sold-out evenings celebrating the release of Little Warrior (Top 10 Jazz Releases of 2013).
Frank Martin (pno); Sam Bevan (bs), Matthew Swindells (drm) will join the passionate vocalist & arranger to perform a new program of music from North and South of the Equator. Lisa will put her language skills to work, dedicating a full set to songs from Brazil. Special guests promise further surprise and delight.
Please join us for this special send-off show as Lisa heads out to the East Coast to perform Little Warrior live in DC, Baltimore and New York City.
Little Warrior is Engelken's follow-up to Caravan (Best of 2010 by the Jazz Journalists Association) and includes four of Lisa's originals, her new lyric version of Wayne Shorter's "Nefertiti", and fresh re-imaginings of works by The Cars, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell and Abbey Lincoln.
Critics have compared Lisa's unique vocal stylings to Blossom Dearie, Ricki Lee Jones, Flora Purim, Anita O'Day, Joni Mitchell, Randy Crawford, Tom Waits, Louis Armstrong and a "hip Barbara Streisand."
Lisa has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Tom Waits, John Cameron Mitchell, Stephen Trask, T-Bone Burnett, Greg Brown and Yo la tengo. She was awarded the Bay Area Theatre Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Yitzhak in the rock musical Hedwig & the Angry Inch.
"She is an utter original. Blessed with superlative power, control and range. Engelken can, as mood requires, be as soft as dew or as intense as a sleet storm; her interpretive instincts are astounding." - Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
