Triple Play: A Diverse Trio of Trios
Music by Mendelssohn, Dvořák, and Debussy

This program features three outstanding and varied works for trios composed over the span of about 75 years. Mendelssohn's Trio in D minor for Violin, Cello, and Piano, is a passionately romantic piece constructed in the classical sonata-allegro format employed so successfully by Beethoven and his predecessors. Next, we present Dvořák's celebrated "Dumky" trio for the same instruments. For Dvořák, this piece represents a break from the sonata format he used for his first three trios; it is a kind of fantasia in six movements, alternating deep pathos with exuberant and sunny sections. Our final work is Debussy's lovely trio of 1915, which moves beyond not only the sonata form, but also much of conventional harmonic structure. He even changes the instruments: violin, cello, and piano are replaced by flute, viola, and harp, a combination of timbres that is marvelously suited to the magic in this music.
