Many composers save the tenderest expressions for their slow movements. In this concert you will hear some of the most soul-wrenching slow movements in music. Dvořák's Romantic Pieces derive from early unrequited love and Shostakovich's continual angst, expressed so tellingly in his Largo, is framed by bitter humor. After the premiere of Cesar Franck's famous quintet, given at a private gathering of his colleagues, a newspaper critic pronounced its Lento too intimate for public consumption. After the performance Saint-Saens, pianist for the quintet and to whom it was dedicated, stalked out, disgusted at such a naked display of passion. He left the score sitting on the piano. Luckily, the quintet's introduction to the public announced Franck's arrival in the ranks of world-class composers, and since then the magnificent work has been performed widely to the delight of audiences. Now you may be the judge!
