Hands On: Material Histories Mixtape
Target Free Sundays Hands On: Material Histories Mixtape
The Material Histories: Artists in Residence 2013-14 exhibition features artwork created through the altering of used, found and ready-made objects and texts. The process for creating many of these works is similar to the process music producers and "beatmakers" use to construct beats by chopping, splicing or looping songs in order to establish new narratives. This workshop will explore the culture and history of sample-based Hip Hop and how it has been used to drive a new form of expression. Participants will use ready-made sonic works to create a mixtape for works in the Material Histories exhibition. DJ/Musicologist Mekeva McNeil will facilitate this program, which explores intersections between art and music.
Hands On is FREE, and includes a lunch hour with the artists. Program is designed specifically for teenagers. RSVP is required, please visit www.studiomuseum.org/event-calendar.
Youth Programs are made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, Colgate-Palmolive, Dedalus Foundation, Inc., Joy of Giving Something, Inc., Surdna Foundation, and Keith Haring Foundation.
