Back after their Aging Gracelessly show in April, Suzi and Doug return to the Pubaret in a blaze of glory and a haze of...well, basically, just a haze. With a combination of jazz standards, original tunes and a dash of rock and roll for good measure, this show aims to answer the following pertinent questions: Do you know where I put the lyrics? What's that chord again? And, of course, did you remember the key?
Thirty years ago, in the days before reading glasses and large fonts, Suzi and Doug performed together at Curtains Up, where they discovered they had sympathetic musical tastes. Hitting spots like the Groaning Board, Fitzgerald's, and the Café on the Park, they performed jazz, blues, rock 'n roll, music theatre and whatever eclectic tunes took their fancy. Although life and work eventually took them in different directions, they found opportunities to work together, including an evening of original pieces, Together Again for the First Time, as part of the Harbourfront Swing Shift Cabaret series.
Subsequently, Doug has played, conducted and arranged just about every style of music going. An accomplished classical pianist, composer and accompanist, he has also music directed shows across Canada including Forever Plaid and Ain't Misbehavin'. He's played everything from big shows Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime and Sunset Boulevard to big bands as a member of the Jessie Award winning big band for Forever Swing to Dixieland. He's also a mean rock 'n roll player, having toured for a number of years with The Fridgidaires, a five-piece 50's and 60's band. He has just returned from a two-month stint in Vancouver, playing Spamalot at the Arts Club.
Suzi is just winding down her role as the Judge in Chris John and Kevin Fox's No Chance in Hell, mounted at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival, where it won both a Patron's Pick award and a Best of Fringe extension at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. An actor/singer, Suzi toured extensively with Les Misérables, joining the original Toronto run in progress, and going as far afield as Honolulu and Anchorage. Other favourite productions include Oliver!, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds and The House of Martin Guerre, where she shared the stage with her then-unborn youngest son. A songwriter herself, Suzi composed and music directed The 401 Show for the Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg. She currently keeps her hand in by writing music for a much younger audience, as an Orff Instructor at the Toronto District School Board, where she teaches and leads music workshops.
They are joined once again by the incomparable Bob Hewus on bass, who, in addition to being an extraordinary talent, is the only one still with-it enough to remember the set list.
Doug and Suzi are looking forward to entertaining you.
