doRian Mode Plays Cherry Hill Bed & Breakfast Inn Sunday August 17 at 5 PM
This will be a pot luck, so please bring your most special delicious dish with which to wow the other guests, and BYOB, (or not).
DORIAN BARTLEY sings vintage jazz and blues while playing upright bass, supported by the piano and cornet of BOB JOHNS. They are joined by TONY BLAKE on percussion, and DAVID SCOTT on sax: The doRiAN Mode. She enjoys an expressive approach to the jazz standard in the tradition of cabaret.
Dorian was born in the Midwest to a second-generation Dutch mother and African-American father and performed in string bands throughout her youth. She pursued choral studies at the University of Michigan and the University of California at Berkeley and taught vocal music for many years in Petaluma's public schools as well as working with the Artifacts, a local trio. She currently performs with Foxes in the Henhouse, winner of the Bohemian's 2013 Norbay Award for Best Acoustic/Folk Band, as well as The Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble and various freelance groups. Dorian plays at clubs, festivals and private events around the Bay Area.
BOB JOHNS (piano and cornet) plays each Tuesday night with his jazz buddies at the Comstock Saloon in San Francisco's North Beach. Bob found like-minded players who formed the fusion group Nexus, playing in San Francisco and the East Bay through the 80s. He played keyboard and trombone for a time in the African group, Hedzoleh Soundz.
TONY BLAKE (percussion) was born and raised in San Francisco. As a 'chameleon-like' or 'eclectic' percussionist, Tony is equally comfortable in symphony orchestras, small jazz ensembles, folk, rock or world music groups, he has developed a style that draws on many traditions.
DAVID SCOTT (sax) boarded a ship when he was an Australian teenager and headed for New Caledonia as a jazz musician. He settled for 10 years in Tahiti, playing jazz, rock and island music as well as learning French. David loved the fast dance tempos and when he sat in with a Sonoma County band, Gator Beat (now known as Gator Nation) in 1990, his fate was sealed. He has interwoven the horn with the accordion in his own unique Zydeco style. David is part of the Collaboration Jazz Band which performs locally.
