Boston favorites via Western Mass - Rusty Belle - return to the familiar digs of the Lizard Lounge for a month of Tuesdays featuring the bands junkyard folk and a special guest each week.
Rusty Belle has a curious habit of coaxing very different, even huge sounds out of a relatively small stable of acoustic instruments. Some tunes offer harmonies reminiscent of '60s folk, others country blues, and still others a plaintive, swinging melancholy.
THE BLUE RIBBONS The Blue Ribbons was formed by singer/songwriter/keyboardist James Rohr. They have been building a base of devoted fans with their original and soulful music. Described as "Ray Charles and Tom Waits on a pirate ship with Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart," they combine "upbeat disillusionment and celebratory fatalism with musicianship" Charan Devereux;Boston Globe.
Together and individually, the members of The Ribbons have performed and/or recorded with: Sarah Borges, Geoff Farina, Bow Thayer, Eddie Kirkland, Miss Tess, NRBQ, Levon Helm, Edgar Winter, Booker T. Jones, Larry Campbell, Stu Kimball, and Ringo Starr.
All very active musicians, each member of The Blue Ribbons brings his influences and experiences to the music and this is at the heart of their creativity. Anything goes in this band, and it usually does.
MORE ON RUSTY BELLE... Matt Lorenz, Kate Lorenz and Zak Trojano harmonize with intuitive strength while laying down a percussive layer of junk drums, classical and electric guitars and an odd array of melodic instruments. Expect to hear anything from a whiskey lullaby or a tiny tango to a rock anthem or a smoky blues.
Poignant, honest lyrics with a rustic, dusty feel. Rusty Belle is unpredictable, original and raw. It is a convergence of styles. Not a knew genre, but a fresh approach.
"This band can give you attitude, or be a ray of sunshine to your ears needs...songs include a magnificent fusion of genres from country to rock and blues, to 80's pop, creating a smoothie of liquid gold." (Culture Fly UK)
"I can't stop listening to it. Each time through I say, okay, that's my favorite song ... and then next time I say it for a completely different-sounding song ... and the next time for yet another. Etc. This is a very strong recording." (VinScelsa, WFUV and Sirius FM)
