TAPESTRY, with Mehmet Ali Sanlikol
Tapestry, described by CD Classics as "one of America's most polished vocal ensembles," returns to the Old San Ysidro Church to create a beautiful fabric of sound. This evening's one-of-a-kind concert, Song of Songs: Return to the Garden, weaves together Hebrew, Medieval Latin, Yiddish, Sephardic and Spanish songs and instrumental music of the Ottoman Empire, performed by Mehmet Ali Sanlikol on the dudu, oud, and ney. Many of the pieces will be accompanied by the exceptional vielle and medieval harp playing of Shira Kammen. Tapestry has established an international reputation for its bold conceptual programming which combines medieval and traditional repertory with contemporary compositions. Tapestry has won numerous awards, Including WQXR and Chamber Music America's Recording of the Year and the prestigious Echo Klassik Prize, Germany's highest honor for a recording. Based in Boston, the ensemble made its 1995 concert debut in its hometown with performances of Steve Reich's Tehillim at Jordan Hall which The Boston Globe deemed "a knockout." Tapestry engagements include the festivals at Utrecht, Maastricht, Flanders, Regensburg, the Hannover A Capella Woche, Le Donne in Musica Rome, Festival International des Musiques Sacrées de Québec, as well as the Hildegard von Bingen Symposium at the University of Oregon and many others.
With their Song of Songs: Return to the Garden program, Tapestry looks back on one of their most popular programs and widens their scope in collaboration with Mehmet Ali Sanlikol, adding Arabic flavors to Tapestry's signature sound. This concert brings together a multitude of interpretations, both sensual and spiritual, of Song of Songs: a 3,000 year-old text, which has been variously classified as an erotic love song, and as Jewish and Christian allegories.
