International Heritage Music Festival - Mahala Balkan Trio
Mahala plays high-energy, soulful music from the folk traditions of Bulgaria and it's neighboring countries. Musicians Georgi Petrov (guitar), Matt Schreiber (accordion) and Boyana Trayanova (tupan) met through a mutual love of Bulgarian music in their current home of New Orleans, a city not unfamiliar to collective celebration and dancing in the streets. Boyana and Georgi hail from Bulgaria, and Matt recently moved from Maine to the Big Easy after playing with the Balkan band Cinder Conk. Reflected in the Mahala's namesake, a word for neighborhood, the band does what Balkan folk music does best - turns strangers into friends and makes odd meters feel funky.
