Voices of Ascension - The Voices' Choral Celebration
Most vocal ensembles specialize in one or two styles or periods of music. But the Voices of Ascension have always enjoyed performing works from all periods and nationalities of classical music. This program will celebrate the enormous stylistic and interpretive breadth of the ensemble. Works from the 21st Century (by Chiayu and Tabakova) will contrast with the Ave Maria by Josquin Desprez composed in the late 1400s and with the magnificent motet (Singet dem Herrn) by Bach. Messiaen and Duruflé will be heard next to Byrd and Palestrina. The German-Austrian Romantic style of Brahms (Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren) and Bruckner (Os justi) will lead to its ultimate conclusion in Schönberg's monumental Friede auf Erden. And the great text of Psalm 90 will be shown in arguably the two greatest settings of those words: Vaughan Williams' Lord, thou hast been our refuge, and Charles Ives' overwhelming masterpiece, Psalm 90.
For lovers of choral music, this concert will be memorable occasion.
