Voices of Ascension - Fauré Requiem and Russian Orthodox
Sarah Shafer, Soprano Evan Hughes, Bass-baritone
The glorious, rich repertory drawn from the Russian Orthodox Church will feature several excerpts from Rachmininoff's inspired All Night Vigil (Vespers), and works by Tchaikovsky, Lvovsky, and Bortniansky. Our full 40-voiced ensemble will be augmented by additional bassi profundi, the low bass voices that provide that most distinctive Russian sound.
Twenty-five years ago, in 1990, it was Fauré's beloved Requiem that was featured at the very first concert of the Voices of Ascension. Since then, Dennis Keene and the Voices have become widely admired for their inspired interpretations of French choral music, and the Fauré is acknowledged as one of their signature pieces. From the rich string sonorities of the opening movements to the ethereal soprano tones of the "In Paradisum," Fauré has created one of the most sublime works in the choral repertory.
