Melissa's Story:

On April 8th, 2014, my sister Melissa Kirby suffered a rare type of stroke that left her without the ability to move, eat or speak. At only 42, Melissa is a healthy and vibrant wife, mother of two, Colette (9) and Kingston (7) and an active member of her community. She loved yoga and exercise, volunteering at her children's school and working as a partner at Shine Creative in Baltimore and most of all being with her family.

Despite this tragedy, her spirit still shines through. Although Melissa has full cognitive function, she must now relearn how to move, eat and talk through intense daily therapy. Recovery for this type of stroke is incredibly slow, but not impossible! Studies in neuroplasticity show that the brain can create new pathways of development and there are success stories out there to prove it, but it takes a long time and a lot of treatment. Her rehabilitation will require a great deal of money for the ongoing progressive therapy she will need beyond the "standard recovery time" deemed and covered by most insurance policies. It seems unethical for insurance not to cover her past 60 days in rehabilitation, but unfortunately that is our reality.
