The King and I
Set in the 1860's the King of Siam (Tom Hastings) hires Anna Leonowens (Cathy McKay) to teach the royal children and wives english and Western culture. She is accommpanied by her young son Louis (Adam Bollings). They are first introduced to Eastern ways when greeted by the Prime Minister Kralahome (Dave Ostrowski)and in a more genteel manner by the King's first wife Lady Thiang (Michelle Emmond). Tuptin (Courtney Lenhart) a gift to the King from the King of Burma and her lover Lun Tha (Bruce Walters) extend the contrast between cultures through outstanding vocal and movement performance to the issues of polygmey (as accepted in Eastern societies) and monagamey (the common relationship in the Western cultures). A highlight of the show is the Eastern style ballet of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" choreographed by Lynn Boyer with lead dancer Jessica Furtado. The success of the cultural merge is seen through the performace of the Crown Prince Chululongkorn (Collin Moore). A large cast of princes and princesses ranging in age from mid twenties to 4 years of age and the Kings wives and Palace guards round out a cast of fifty.
Many familiar songs ("I Whistle a Happy Tune", "Getting to Know You", "We Kiss in a Shadow", "I Have Dreamed" and "Shall We Dance" will bring back memories of the original play and movie starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. This production is musically directed by the Heather MacRobie (2008 New Hampshire Theater Awards "Best Music Director) and Directed and Produced by Alan D. Kaplan. Steve Short is the stage manager and the technical directors for lighting - Rick Elliott, Sound - John Sauter, set design Carey Cahoon and Costumes - Mary Selvoski and Mary Jo Smith complete the production team.
