Crossing Borders - Jazz at Woodshed Music & Arts
Cool and smoky, intimate and fiery, swinging and soulful - Crossing Borders is an international jazz group led by the heralded Canadian jazz vocalist/pianist Jennifer Scott and S.F. Bay Area saxophonist Kristen Strom - wellknown for her melodic, engaging style.
The combination of Jennifer's voice and Kristen's saxophone is exhilarating. Comprising the powerhouse rhythm section are superb guitarist Scott Sorkin, (Kristen's husband,) virtuosic bassist Rene Worst, (Jennifer's husband,) and the peerless Jason Lewis on drums.
The band's energy is fueled by the chemistry of two married couples in the band, musicians who have played together for years and who also share an emotional connection. Whether an artful reworking of a standard or a new take on a classic pop tune, the creative collaboration of Crossing Borders comes straight from the heart.
Jennifer Scott and Rene Worst are Canadians from Vancouver, BC., and the remaining members are Americans from the San Francisco Bay Area. As a result, they literally "cross borders" regularly.
The Crossing Borders name, however, also captures their approach to music the material ranges from Brazilian tunes to pop, jazz and original music.
After playing together in Ed Johnson's Novo Tempo for 5 years, and collaborating on one another's projects, they found that they were of like minds musically, and so decided to record a project together in 2007. Their second album will be released in August, 2014, and promises to further celebrate their special musical connection.
Audiences respond to the special combination of Jennifer's voice and Kristen's horn, the superb musicianship and interaction with the rhythm section, and the musical connection throughout the band.
"Vancouver's Jennifer Scott is a supremely resourceful singer who should be far better known. Co-led by San Jose reed expert Kristen Strom, Crossing Borders features guitarist Scott Sorkin and bassist Rene Worst. The highly sympathetic collaborators make this an ideal showcase for Scott's startlingly inventive, emotionally taut vocals." - Andrew Gilbert, The Mercury News
Guitarist Sorkin's credits include The Count Basie Orchestra, Steve Turre & Michael Turre, Smith Dobson, Louie Bellson. Bassist Rene Worst counts Chet Baker, Joe Pass, Paul Horn and Freddie Hubbard among his credits and drummer Jason Lewis has played with Boz Scaggs, Taylor Eigsti, Kurt Elling.
