Summer Intensive Preserving Workshop with Shakirah Simley
Pollinate Farm & Garden is pleased to welcome Shakirah Simley to the Paulding & Company kitchen for Summer Intensive Preserving! In this very hands-on, 3-hour class, Shakirah (founder of Slow Jams and Bi-Rite Market's 'Canner In Residence') will teach participants practical applications for capturing beautiful stone fruit and summer vegetables. We will cover an introduction to canning theory, safety and preserving basics; you will learn Shakirah's canning secrets and how to tackle local fruit and veggies like a champ. On August 10th, prime your summer pantry for Shakirah's seasonal favorites: juicy peaches, tender okra, fragrant melons and sweet tomatoes.
As any preserver can attest, summer is here and the canning is easy (and fun)! Class participants will receive three (3) hours of hands-on canning instruction, a recipe packet, full jars of everything we make, a serious boost of canning confidence and a delicious, hearty snack. There are limited spaces and Shakirah's canning classes always sell-out quickly sign up today!
Shakirah Simley is the Community Coordinator and Canner-in-Residence for Bi-Rite Market in San Francisco, where she wears a number of hats including: developing jams and preserves for its PUBLIC Label line, cooking instructor at 18 Reasons (its educational arm) and community coordinator in charge of giving and community outreach, with a penchant for programs that support youth and increase access to healthy food. Before arriving at Bi-Rite, Shakirah attended the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy on a Fulbright scholarship, where she received her Master's degree and studied under Italian canners. She has previously owned her own small-artisanal jam business, Slow Jams. She was recently named one of Zagat's "30 under 30: SF Bay Area Up and Comers." She loves putting her food systems, community engagement and jammy talents to work every day.
Pollinate Farm & Garden is an urban homestead emporium located in the heart of Oakland. They provide supplies for seed-to-table organic farming and gardening, food preservation, small scale livestock raising and beekeeping, and teach the "hows" and "whys" of DIY Food. Paulding & Company is delighted to welcome them, and will be planning more class collaborations for the future!
