SORIAH w/Ashkelon Sain "Atlan" CD RELEASE
"Atlan" (Projekt Records) is the culmination of a year and a half of collaboration between Soriah and Ashelon Sain. It is recommended for fans of Dead Can Dance's electro-ethnic hybrids and/or the organic ambient works of Rapoon, O Yuki Conjugate, Vidna Obmana, and beyond. On "Atlan", Soriah's voice spreads across the audio field like a spirit split into numerous ectoplasmic emanations. Sain then overlays the singing with mesmeric soundscapes built from moody synthesizer pads, softly insistent tribal percussion loops, and echoing ghost drones. The results are blissful and evocative, to be sure. Yet these songs evoke no specific homeland or historical era. This is music unanchored to place, set free to float in its own transcendent space. Like a command performance by time-twisting magicians, "Atlan" calls upon our eternal collective memories even as it creates new myths and mysteries yet to be unraveled. Soriah has extensively trained in, and received recognition for his achievements with his Tuvan throat singing. Most recently, he was honored as the Third Place winner in the International Symposium of Khoomei Competition, and "Best Foreigner" in the 2008 Ustuu-Khooree World Music Festival in Tuva, where the form originated.
